Hey Jochen,

Hi, sorry for writing in English but I don't speak German alas. Last week I returned from a 2-week trip to Libya. Went there with a small Polish tour operator specialising in Saharan trips (had visited Niger, Chad, and Algeria with them before). 16 tourists + Libyan drivers, cooks, an interpreter and 2 armed policemen. We flew to Djerba with a promise of visa letter, crossed the border at Dehiba Wazin (next to Nalut) and got our visas at the crossing (3-hour waiting time). Our route: Nalut, Ghadames, the desert (going south through Hammada, Ramla, Maghedet stone forest), Ghat, around Acacus to Al Aweinat, Germa, Ubari lakes, to Sabha where we took a plane to Tripoli; then we visited Leptis and went through Sabratha back to Djerba. The plan was to cross the border to Tunisia on 27th March in Ras Ajdir but it had been closed a few days earlier, so we crossed at Dehiba Wazin again (at the same crossing we had used to enter Libya) and there was no trouble at all. Also, a part of the original itinerary was going from Acacus to Germa through Messak and Wadi Mathendous but the area was closed by the military (Haftar's, BTW). There were no dangerous situations. The local people, including soldiers, militiamen, and policemen, were very friendly. There were dozens of checkpoints operated by different militias but the permits held and shown by our escort policemen (from Tripoli) worked everywhere (both in Tripoli and Haftar controlled areas). Sometimes we had additional local police escort. It was important to our hosts that we are safe and happy (and well fed despite Ramadan). I will gladly answer any trip-related questions.

Thank you very much, Wolski, very interesting info!

Obviously, it will be very important to know if there is any chance to arrange that trip with vehicles. Could you please tell us the name of that Polish company and their contacts? Thanks!

In addition, it would also be of great interest to know which year you managed to do the Niger trip and where you went.

Thanks again and best wishes,
Achim

Hello @Achim and thank you!
If you mean going to Libya in your own car - I don't know if that is feasible. All the cars we used were Libyan. Both minibuses which took us from Djerba to Nalut and from Tripoli to Djerba and Toyota Landcruisers with which we travelled from Nalut to Sabha. The cars were logo-ed by Murcia Travel (https://murcia.ly, murcia.tr.ly@gmail.com) and I believe that company was the local collaborator of the Polish tour operator (Torre, https://www.torre.pl). We also displayed Libyan flags on high antennas of the cars - not without a reason. What I am sure of is that free roaming around in Libya is out of question. Our documents were checked even a few times a day at road checkpoints and by patrols in the desert. Our official permit included the detailed itinerary. And for example we couldn't visit Kabaw, despite we were close and asked to do it, because it was not in the documents. The two policemen who accompanied us all the time (nice and friendly guys btw.) not only helped us with all the document checks but also took care that we followed the plan.

Re. Niger, I was there in November 2022. The planned route was as follows: Agadez, Timia, Assode, Arakao, through Tenere to Dirkou, then up to Djado and down to Bilma, and through Tenere back to Agadez. However, the military forbade us to cross Tenere, so we spent more time in Air, e.g. visited Iferouane, and went for 2 days to Erg Chiriet. The closed area and the reason for it were practically the same as now in Libya: the surroundings of the Salvador Pass are dangerous because of human and drug smugglers and bandits who make a living by robbing the illegal gold miners. Funnily, last year they managed to rob us anyway in Tibesti.
In Air we were escorted by 3 Toyotas full with Nigerien soldiers and in Tenere (Chiriet) by 6! That small army needed to be paid by the local tour company and indirectly by us. And that is, as far as I know, the issue with going there now. In theory travelling to northern Niger is possible and I know of at least one group which visited Bilma last autumn. But after the coup the cost of the military escort sky rocketed and the trip is not economically viable for the operators anymore.

If I can help in any other way, please let me know. Best regards!

Hello,

that is really very interesting news!
Regarding Niger: a few months after your trip in 2022, the government there was overthrown. As we know, the coup leaders also immediately cancelled the agreement with the EU, which had radically restricted the flow of refugees to Europe via Libya, although never completely prevented it.
Since then, brutal human trafficking has been in full swing again. A very lucrative trade in which many "organisations" are involved. As none of these "organisations" like to show their cards, it can be assumed that your freedom of movement - which was already limited back then - has now been reduced even further. It's a shame for this beautiful country and its increasingly poor inhabitants, in which many of us could at least move around freely as a traveller a long time ago.

Hallo liebe Libyeninteressierte,

Italian friends were in Libya in April and May. Tour akakus, ghat, ghadames, ubari lakes. the Italian operetor tour is Sahara service. Problems with refuelling both gasoline and diesel. When it arrives, long queues are created.
In november they will return.
I would like to go in March by motorcycle

Man verlor mehrere Tage.
