Reports that one of two Tunisian women arrested near the Cyrenaican town of Mechili on Sunday was the wife of Mokhtar Belmolhtar, leader of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), have now been denied by officials in Libya. They say that there was confusion of the identity of the woman’s husband and that while she is indeed married to a terrorist, it is a different Mohktar. Her husband is now said to be Mokhtar Ben Omar Al-Agouri, a Tunisian who is also a member of AQIM. It is thought that he is in Jufra, to which the woman caught in an ambush two days ago by LNA forces near Mechili, south of Labraq, was said to be heading. It is nonetheless believed that Belmokhtar is based in Libya, albeit further south.

Isil is regrouping in southern Libya with the support of al-Qaeda and preparing for further attacks, according to the Libyan defence minister, who claimed the effort was being spearheaded by Mokhtar Belmokhtar, one of the world's most wanted men. The unholy alliance of the world’s two most dangerous terrorist groups in Libya is at odds with the public animosity between al-Qaeda and Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) leadership. Ayman Al Zawahiri, the head of al-Qaeda, recently launched a blistering public attack on Isil’s brutal methods and propaganda, branding them “liars”. But in Libya fighters from the two groups are "actively co-operating", according to Mahdi Barghathi, the defence minister in the UN-backed government in Tripoli. “Isil and al-Qaeda have never attacked each other here and now we have evidence that they are actively cooperating,” Mr Barghathi told the Daily Telegraph. “Al-Qaeda is providing logistics and support to help Isil re-group and launch attacks.” Mr Barghathi said that Belmokhtar, the infamous one-eyed al-Qaeda leader thought to have been killed in 2016, was believed to be alive and leading the remnants of Isil forces who escaped a Libyan offensive to retake Sirte last year.

According to the site specializing in security affairs, Middle East Eye, citing Malian and Mauritanian security sources , the head of Al-Mourabitoune would have been replaced by his deputy Abderrahmane al-Sanhadji.
According to the same source, the decision was taken by the “council of notables” of the terrorist group.

Algeria yesterday sentenced Mokhtar Belmokhtar, known as “Belaawer” (the One-Eyed), to death in absentia after finding him guilty of forming and leading a terrorist organisation and in possessing of, trading in and marketing weapons and ammunition. The Criminal Court of Oran found Belmokhtar guilty of setting up Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.

Quoting Libyan security sources' intelligence from armed Islamists, London-based Saudi magazine El Majalaa reported that Mokhtar Belmokhtar - an emir affiliated to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), whose death was announced by the United States in 2013, 2015 and 2016 - is, in fact, alive. While three armed militants in contact with the Libyan sources confirmed that Belmokhtar - also known as "Le Borgne" or "the One-Eyed" after losing an eye in Afghanistan - was killed by an American strike in Libya's Derna, a number of which occurred in 2015, two Islamist leaders affirm that he made it out alive, and is currently somewhere between the borders of Chad, Niger and Mali.
